HONDURAS
CIUDAD NUEVA [NEW CITY] - CHOLUTECA
Ciudad Nueva is a community of families who were relocated on the aftermath of Hurricane Match in 1998. After the hurricane flooded the entire region, these families lost their homes, all their belongings, and their hope.
In partnership with the Samaritan Purse, GCLA built in Ciudad Nueva 565 homes for these families. The GCLA church in Choluteca, city that is about 10 miles away from Ciudad Nueva, has reached out and ministered to the families in this community.
A Day Care for Children at Risk
Most of these children have been abused physically and emotionally. Many of them suffered from malnourishment, and dreadful skin infections. Their mothers leave for work before sunrise and return after sunset, to earn less than $2 per day. Our goal is to minister to them and their families so they are safe, healthy and happy. In the day care center, we provide them a meal, Bible classes, and personal care. We also provide after school care, as well as dental and medical care. |

A Tortilla Factory
The GCLA church started a Tortilla Factory, which is run by some of the single mothers of these children. The production is over 20,000 tortillas a day, equivalent to half a million a month. The goal is to sell one million tortillas a month, and then to start a bakery. |

Malnourished Children Recovery Center
Many children die of malnutrition or are growing up with sight problems, and poor muscle and brain development. A malnutrition level 3 (one of the highest levels) can cause a child to have great difficulty learning in school. This clinic will start operations at the end of 2006. Missionaries will be able to minister to children with extreme and moderate stages of malnutrition by cooking for them, feeding them, washing their clothes, cleaning their facilities, etc. |

Public Schools
To improve the public education in the area, GCLA is restoring and furnishing the school buildings. Some of the schools don’t have bathrooms, and when it rains the roofs leak. Schools don’t have enough classrooms, so students of different grades take their classes simultaneously in the same classroom. Teams help with building classrooms, and with other small projects and activities, such as fixing desks, and teaching the kids basic habits of physical and dental hygiene. This service creates many opportunities to share the Gospel with the children, their teachers, and their parents. |
