NICARAGUA
MANAGUA
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America. Over the last 30 years, the country has suffered the effects of a devastating earthquake, a communist dictatorship, and a civil war. Democracy was restored after the civil war.
Pastor Angel Amador, who had led the GCLA church in the city of Danli, Honduras, moved last July to plant a church in the capital city of Managua.
The younger segment of the population in Nicaragua was raised under a communist-atheist philosophy. The older generations had suffered repeated political unrest, which hardened their hearts and made them skeptical to faith issues.
Children at Risk – Day Care
Masaya is a small community near Managua where the Sandinistas (communist) relocated the veterans of war. Most of these veterans of war have either physical or suffer of mental illnesses, and some of them experience both. There are neither medical clinics for rehabilitation nor training centers to teach trades to these war veterans, so they may become productive and provide for their families.

As a response to these needs, some mothers have started a Child Care Program. The day care center operates in a building with no windows, no electricity, no running water and no bathrooms. They lack furniture and materials to adequately teach the children. STM teams that come will remodel this building, and will build a playground and a fence. The renovation of this building includes other small projects, such as landscaping, painting the facilities, and assembling new furniture.
Teaching in Schools
Teaching English is one of the best ways to create opportunities to reach out to students of middle school and high school. Managua has many schools and universities that are accessible for Americans to tutor students in Math and English. STM teams will have the opportunity to serve with their skills and abilities.

Compassion Evangelism Projects
The STM trips will serve in the church members’ neighborhoods In Managua, through various small projects, such as doing small repairs in community centers, medical clinics, public schools, and other public gathering places. One of the goals with these projects is to incorporate the community in working along side the teams. The teamwork with the communities will bring many opportunities to build strong relationships with community leaders and members in the community.
